Network Cables

A network consists of two or more computers linked together to share resources such as a printer or a scanner, exchange files, and enable electronic connectivity. Network cables are data transmission cables and are used to connect one network device to another. These cables enable high-speed data transfers between different components of the network.

Different types of network cables are used depending on the kind of network. The type of cable used for a network depends on the network's topology, protocol, and size. If a network has large number of network devices, it will need cables that provide high speed and error free connectivity.

Some of the cables being used today are Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables, coaxial cables and fiber optic cables. The UTP cable is the most popular variety, largely used for school networks as it transfers data at 100 mbps. Coaxial cables have a single copper conductor at their center. A plastic layer provides insulation between the center conductor and the braided metal shield. The outer metal shield blocks out outer interferences such as lights, motors and other computers. Fiber optic cables consist of a center glass core surrounded by several layers of protective materials. It transmits light rather than electronic signals and transfers signals over much longer distances than coaxial and twisted pair cables.

A local area network (LAN) requires network cables to stay connected. Almost every organization is going for networking these days to improve efficiency. This has increased the demand for network cables.

Network cables are the backbone of any network. However, today several networks are switching over to other mediums of data transfer such as high frequency radio signals, and infrared light beams to connect the workstations. These systems are not only fast and effective, but also do away with the problem of maintain several hundred feet of cables spreading across the workspace. With such technologies coming to the forefront, the future may well tilt in favor of wireless systems.

VGA Extender - Worthwhile For Transmitting High Quality Images Or Video Over Long Distances

VGA video can be transmitted using Cat5/5e/6 cables from a computer to a display placed up to 950 feet away with the help of VGA extenders. These devices are sometimes called VGA Boosters, signal boosters or VGA baluns. These are used to increase the signal strength from a VGA port and allow it to be passed over a Cat5/5e/6 cable.

While there are a variety of video extenders available on the market today, such as DVI extender, HDMI extender, Composite extender, Component extender, the VGA extender is still the most commonly used. The VGA over Cat5 extender is a solution comprising of local and remote units. While the former connects to the video source, the latter is connected to the extended display. Both these units are designed to ensure a rapid signal delivery. Using Cat5 cables, these devices enable separation of digital displays and the hardware running them. Despite the large distances, these devices provide crisp and sharp images with a resolution up to 1900x1200 and are designed to deliver uncompromised video quality. With the help of extenders you can keep your PC in a secure location while the video is still accessible to your customers or employees.

VGA extenders are compatible with any operating system and any video source with a VGA connection, including PCs, DVD players, VHS, DVRs and so on. Some VGA to Cat5 extenders are also available with an audio option. In addition, several models come as VGA splitter extenders with 2, 4 or 8 ports and can be controlled with optional RS232 or infrared remote. Another version of this device is also made in a wireless format. This wireless vga extender connects to any projector with a VGA/HD15 port and shares it with multiple computer monitors as well.

These extenders work with simple plug and play installation and setup and require no additional software or drivers. Provide secure access, control, and management within your enterprise infrastructure when it is necessary. Due to these features, the VGA extenders are often used in Military, financial and medical arenas. They are also being used in schools, businesses, airports, restaurants, banks and shopping malls. These extender units provide the flexibility you need for a customized digital signage installation and are therefore an ideal solution for digital signage applications.

How to Make Your Computer Last Longer

Computers do not last forever otherwise manufacturers' would give unlimited warranties to their customers. Unfortunately most of these devices only last for an average of three years and do not function optimally for over half the time. When this happens our options are limited - we can either discard, replace or upgrade the gadget. However, as it is not advisable to just throw away a device that was bought with hard earned money I would say the best options would be to either replace or upgrade it.

Most computer faults usually occur in one of the following hardware.

The Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) which helps the computer provide its video output could easily be upgraded if it develops a problem. After replacing the old hardware, ensure its appropriate driver is also installed.

The Random Access Memory (RAM) assists the computer process data depending on its size and capacity. Simply upgrading this hardware could improve system performance.

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the heartbeat of the computer. It controls the execution of programs on the computer and could be quite difficult to upgrade without tampering with the motherboard hence replacing the computer might be a better option if the CPU develops a fault.

The Hard Disc Drive (HDD) is where all documents and program files are stored in the computer. This is probably one of the most common hardware to upgrade. Some computers can be expanded to have more than one HDD while if you are running out of disc space there are plenty of cheap and affordable HDDs in the market to upgrade your computer.

The Motherboard is the circuit board on the computer. It usually develop breaks down due to overheating or electrical faults. Whenever this happens, it is simply better to replace the system as you don't want to be toying away with electrical tools like the soldering iron, etc.

Whatever your decision, it is very important to make sure it is carefully thought through and influenced by cost, safety and electronic-waste management considerations.

The Effect of Heat on CPUs and Computer Systems

With all that electricity passing through silicon at an amazing speed, there's sure to be friction; and heat. The experts are continuously telling us how important it is to cool these tiny little pieces of silicon they call "CPUs" and "chipsets". The problem is, parts of the cpu start to deform at high temperatures, also known as "burn out" temperatures. Although there are many many layers to the microprocessor, we focus our attention to the top of the chipset for the most effective overall cooling. So what if it is hot? If the silicon's not deformed then the electrons can pass properly and we make the connection. So why cool it more than you need to?

Well, firstly lets look at silicon. Silicon comes in two types, P-Type and N-type, but effectively, the heat properties of the two behave the same. Silicon, as it heats up becomes more conductive, letting more electrons (put simply, electricity particles) through. Now I know what your thinking, "hold on, if it's more conductive, doesn't that mean it should be faster?", but no. The speed of the computer isn't on how fast the electricity moves through silicon, although, speeding that up would improve things. We've all heard the term, clock speed. Gigahertz. Megahertz. That is, the speed at which it can execute each instruction and synchronize each computer part. So to put it in lemans terms, the faster the clock speed, the quicker the computer (not taking architecture into account, for all you techies out there).

To put all of that simply, a CPUs heat is directly related to it's clock speed; the higher the clock speed, the more power used and subsequently, more heat. Without adequate cooling, today's CPUs can very easily reach well over 150 degrees Celsius, if there weren't systems in place to prevent it. These systems include a clock speed limiter. When the CPU gets above temperature, the CPU management (BIOS - CMOS system) slows it down. This results in a complex system that gives performance increases with a cooler system, and performance slow down in a hot system.

While performance is a big aspect to look at in hot systems, so is the ongoing toll on the hardware. Consistently hot systems aren't expected to last anywhere near as long a cooler systems. Thermal fatigue in silicon results in cracks in transistors, and transistor mounting failures, in particular. Of course, just one transistor failure on a complex system such as a motherboard or graphics card can result in the entire system failing. And a replacement board being an appropriate fix.

What's a safe operating temperature?

Each computer system is different. Operating temperatures depend largely on the CPU type, the provided cooling, the age of the computer, and the motherboard heat management systems. But as a general rule, your CPU should be running between 40 - 60 degrees Celsius, and your system should be between 20-40 degrees. If it's cooler, great. But generally it's not good to have it running hotter. Laptop batteries are largely affected by heat so be sure to take out batteries if

What is appropriate cooling?
As much as some overclockers will say that you really do need a liquid nitrogen cooling system, a basic, air-cooled, computer fan system is usually fine. As long as your not not overclocking and running power intensive programs (like games), any processor will come included with appropriate cooling. If however, your in a particularly hot part of the world, be sure to look into better fan or even water systems.

VGA to RCA (Composite) Vs VGA to YPbpr (Component)

How do you connect your Computer to your TV?

Recently there is a lot of commotion about people dropping their cable companies and just plugging in their TV's into their computers and watching cable through their computers via Netflicks, Hulu, and about a thousand other providers out there. personally, I only watch a few shows and have no reason to pay for TV all day long if I only watch a couple hours a week. So the idea of plugging my computer into my TV is awesome. However, If people are anything like me, then they don't have nice fancy TV's that natively take the VGA or DVI connection from the computer.

When I looked at the back of my TV I found that my TV didnt have the connections I needed. All I have on my computer is that useless VGA connection (useless for my TV anyways...). Then the only connections I got on my television are Composite (RCA) or Component (YPrpb). A majority of people just give up at this point, but there are some of us that don't want to accept the reality of our situation, I wanted to connect my computer to my TV, and didn't care what I had to do.

Upon doing a little research I found you can get some little conversion boxes that turn that pre-assumed useless VGA connection into something useful. However, I found myself at a cross roads. On one hand there were the VGA to Composite converters. On the other hand there was the VGA to Component converters. Sure there are lots of little features on each that seem nice, but the major thing I noticed up front was, the price. Component is like, five times as expensive! It can't possible be worth it right?

If I must choose, which is best?

Upon doing a bunch of research, checking with friends, and a bunch of other stuff I was able to get the low down on these mysterious converters. What it really boils down to what you need it for. If you only wanted to watch YouTube videos or simple things like PowerPoint presentations where its all standard video or large text, then by all means get the VGA to Composite converter. I found that the VGA to Composite's quality is going to be somewhere around a nice VHS which is just fine for most applications. The reason it drops in quality so much is simply your going from a VGA connection which is a type of High-Def connection down to a composite which maxes out at a screen resolution of 480i. (Example: Your Nintendo Wii maxes out at this unless you have component connections)

To put that in perspective, on your computer screen, if you change that to 1024x768 (which is relatively low for most new computers) that resolution is going to be rather close to 720p. So that conversion to your TV is going to be a very large jump, going from 720p to 480i. For a lot of people this is like a night and day difference. Regardless on how nice your RCA converter is, it just wont look as great as the VGA connection. A lot of times you will see on pages saying that one is better then the other, but in reality, they are all the same, you just get some extra bells and whistles sometimes.

If you are wanting to surf the Internet, check your email, and pretty much do everything you do on your computer, on the television, then your going to want to go for a better connection like Component, HDMI, DVI, or a direct VGA connection. There are converters for each of these, and DVI can be natively converted right into HDMI if you got the connections. (Side note: You can get single link and dual link DVI to HDMI, little known secret is that, they are exactly the same despite what they may tell you.)

In my case, I don't have a fancy TV with those connections so I was mostly looking into VGA to Component. With component your going to get a very clear picture that you can usually set up to 720p or 1080i (people debate on which looks better so I list both). You will be able to surf the Internet and do whatever you would like to do on your computer on your TV just fine. Of course its not going to look as good if you were natively viewing a VGA to VGA or HDMI to HDMI connection but it will look way good. So depending on what you would like to use it for would be which one you would purchase.

If you're strapped for cash and all you want to do is watch YouTube or simple slide shows in a classroom, then composite would work great. If you want a high quality picture and you got a few extra dollars then by all means, go for component or better. You will be much more happy with the better connection, even though it does cost a bit more.

Latest Technology in Computer Hardware

The rate at which new computer hardware products are arriving in the market is simply mind-boggling. As the technology advances, the size and the price of the devices come down, while the efficiency and capacity increase. The scenario is same in all cases, whether it is about internal components like processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics card, and hard disk or for peripheral accessories like mouse, keyboard, and monitors. Personal computers became popular only before about three decades back. But already there are huge piles of outdated and antique hardware components and devices. This is a tribute to the tremendous rate of development of latest technologies in computer hardware field. Perhaps, the newest entrant into the archeological catalogue of computer peripherals is CRT monitors. The sleek looking LCD monitors are spreading like computer virus.

Data storage devices have attracted considerable attention of the technology developers. New kinds of storage devices such as newer versions of flash memory cards, hard disks using latest technology and disks of ever-increasing capacity are the results of advancement in latest technology in compute hardware. The memory size of the random access memory (RAM) cards is soaring to enable the smooth functioning of graphics animation software packages and streaming video websites. Also, computer motherboards have undergone substantial changes over the years. More and more functions are being added to the motherboard. Also, despite the incredible improvement in performance and functionalities, the price of these components has actually fallen steadily.

The most vital component of a computer is the microprocessor. It is in this field that a battle of developing latest technologies in computer hardware takes place. The pace of development of microprocessor increases as the competition between the major processor chip manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD, intensifies. Both the companies are engaging in a neck and neck competition and continuously outdo each other in introducing new technologies.

In the field of computer peripherals, the latest technology in computer hardware is in developing yet another version of wireless mouse and keyboard. The concept of wireless mouse and keyboard is about a decade old. But the development of these items is still a work in progress. The latest products of wireless mouse and keyboard are said to be highly durable and error free.

Some of the developments in the latest technology in computer hardware are gearing up for changing the present concept of desktop and laptop computers. With new developments making possible the convergence of mobile phone technology and computers, a new breed of fully functional palm-top computers are going to be introduced in near future. Zalman VF900-Cu Copper VGA Video Card Cooler

I purchases this because I wanted something quiet, effective and not too large. This definitely accomplishes all those for my 7950GT even with the fan speed turned up to just about 1/3. It may struggle with some of the hotter cards but it cools mine very effectively.

Installation is a snap, although I did remove the adhesive thermal tape on the ramsinks and used Arctic Silver thermal epoxy instead. It does not appear to report fan speeds very well to my motherboard but this isn't a very big concern and could just be a defect with mine.

Check Out Universal VGA Card Heatsink & Fan for $14.88

Universal VGA Card Heatsink & Fan Review

Fan works great, the universal monting attachment actually worked quite well. I mounted it to NVIDIA geforce 6600 video card, to replace old fan with wore-out hypro bearings. So far (2 weeks)it works very well, moves a ton of air, and is very quiet. I am using this in a computer that runs my video surveilance system so it is on 24hrs/365days.

My only complaints are; to clear the PCI card installed below this fan I had to remove the plastic fan cover, also my GPU had a two wire power connect, and this unit came with a 3 wire (no big deal I just spliced on the connector from the old unit.
