Portable VS Desktop

One should be very careful buying a laptop because more than desktops
there are big differences in the technology and feature sets that
matter. Run-down of tech issues:

'True portable' versus 'desktop replacement' tech:

There are at least two major divisions of tech in laptops: tech
designed for laptops and tech designed for desktops but used in laptops.

Laptop tech results in smaller, lighter, cooler-running laptops that
last longer on their batteries. Only downside is they are a lot more
expensive.

Desktop tech results in larger, heavier, hotter-running laptops that
have shorter runtimes on batteries before they need to be recharged. Of
course they are cheaper, sometimes a LOT cheaper, than true portable
tech laptops.

There are likely one or more classes of laptops that would most
accurately be categorized as in between these extremes.

Telling the difference:

On the Intel side, anything labeled "Centrino" is true-portable; but
there are non-Centrino true-portables too. The biggest factor is the
CPU: the "M" for Mobile after the processor, as in Pentium M or Celeron
M, is a huge difference; the chips are barely related to the Pentiums in
desktops. They are really good tech, getting a lot of performance for
a little power, and a lot per clock. So a 1.5 GHz Pentium M sounds
slow but it is more like a 2.25 GHz desktop Pentium 4 or better. Do not
compare the two without multiplying the P-M/C-M speeds. These laptops
often are visually recognizable by being thin & sleek.

Any laptop labeled 'Desktop Replacement' or DTR is one based on
non-portable tech. They are best for those on a budget and/or where the
machine will spend most of its time sitting in one place plugged in to a
wall, or just moved around within a house like between a bedroom and the
living room couch. The true portable tech is worth it if you will be
using the machine on the road a lot or lugging it around in a backpack
or carry case. DTRs look fat (say, around 1" thick, keyboard to desk,
not including screen) and clunky by comparison with the true portables.

In the desktop world AMD is kicking Intel's butt but in the laptop
world it's the other way around. AMD has a portable tech called 'Turion'
meant to compete with Centrino but it's not quite as good. If on the
other hand you are buying a DTR, AMD is probably better because Intel
desktop chips run hotter and perform poorer, especially in games. Also
all current AMD models are 64-bit capable for future operating systems.

In the middle:

Just to confuse things there are intermediate chips: the 'Mobile
Pentium' and 'Athlon64 Mobile'. These are in between on the DTR/portable
spectrum in price & performance, as you would expect. They are more
closely related to desktop tech than portable tech, tho. Also beware of
buying older tech like Pentium III or Athlon XP-based notebooks; if
anyone is still selling these pay bottom dollar.

Graphics & gaming:

Laptop graphics are notoriously slow. But for RTS, it may not matter.
Still the low end may be slow enough to impact the latest RTS's. This
is one area where DTRs just blow away true portables. They can come
with graphics chipsets from NVidia or ATI that compete with decent add-in
card desktop graphics. Pentium M / Celeron M laptops usually come with
Intel graphics, which is slow. Turion laptops are probably faster in
graphics than P-M/C-M's. Find out the graphics chipset the laptop you
are interested in uses and check out on-line reviews to see if anyone
benchmarked an RTS on it, to see if performance will be acceptable.
Graphics becomes a LOT more important if you plan on playing any modern
shooters on the machine.

Other stuff:

- steer clear of any Transmeta CPU based laptops (slowww).

- never buy a laptop with less than 512MB RAM if you can afford it;
Windows XP runs slow in 256M. Prefer a laptop upgradable to at least 1GB.

- buy XP Professional if you plan on ever logging on to a corporate
network

- I care, but you may not, for video out. I can load a laptop's hard
drive with movies & recorded TV MPEG files and use it as a portable
video jukebox. Some laptops have S-Video out ports built-in, some don't.

- Some laptops, especially smaller ones, require an expensive and / or
easy to lose adaptor to plug into an external monitor. Prefer one with
a standard VGA or DVI out port.

- Smaller laptops often omit an optical drive. I wouldn't want to get
one without a DVD burner, for back-ups and stuff, but that's just me.

- Some laptops include FireWire/IEEE1394 ports for hooking up digital
camcorders. Also can be used as a high-speed file transfer / network
port if your desktop has FireWire (400MBps = 4x Ethernet, unless both
have Gigabit Ethernet).

- You want at least 'b & g' wireless support; having no 'g' is
obsolete. 'n' or 'pre-n' is cutting edge.

- Some laptops include built-in card readers for uploading photographs
from your camera quickly.

- All new laptops should include USB 2.0.

- Laptop speakers are always crappy. You can get an awesome pair of
JBL Duet speakers for

Nintendo DSi Handheld Specifications

Today we will look at the Nintendo DSi specifications to see what the new handheld console has to offer. Released to Europe and US in April this new console will be the most advanced handheld on the market to date.

So lets take a look at the specs in detail.

Two screens, 3.25 inches in size. They are larger than the previous DS Lite and have a resolution of 256 x 192. The screens are smaller than the Sony PSP which has a 4.3 inch display and the Apple I-touch at 3.5 inch but bear in mind that the DSi has two screens creating a bigger viewing area.

Cameras. Two cameras provide the DSi with unique gaming abilities and one of them is VGA. The first camera is located on the internal hinge to capture the players face and the second is located externally on the corner of the lid allowing the user to take pictures like a proper camera and using the gaming screens to view the shot. The PSP has an optional camera, which is 1.3mega pixels. The iPod Touch has a built in camera of 2 mega pixels.

Memory wise the Nintendo DSi provides an SD Card slot along with internal flash memory storage of 256mb. The PSP can hold a memory card of up to 16gb and the iPod Touch has 8 to 32gb depending on which size the owner opts for.

All handhelds mentioned have Wi-Fi capabilities. This is an excellent feature which allows users to surf the web, connect with other consoles of the same type, and download new games, applications and software updates. They all have their own customised stores. Nintendo DSi has the DSi - ware shop, PSP has the PS Store and the iPod Touch uses the App Store.

The DSi has single touch screen technology, the PSP does not have this capability although there is a home brew piece of equipment that owners can buy to set up their own touch screen function. The iPod Touch does have touch screen which is multi-touch technology.

The Nintendo DSi is 12% thinner than the DS Lite but the length is a little longer. The power switch on the DS Lite has been replaced to a button on the DSi which is going back to the original DS. A matted finish has been applied compared to the gloss finish of the DS Lite, which is meant to prevent showing finger prints.

Primarily it will be released in matte black and matte white in Europe and the US. In Japan, Nintendo has already released colours in pink, lime green and metallic blue on 20th of March 2009. Battery life is reduced to 9-14 hours on the lowest brightness setting compared to the 15-19 hours of its predecessor. The Game Boy Advanced slot has been removed which means the DSi has lost backward compatibility. This decision was made to improve portability without sacrificing durability.

The CPU in the Nintendo DSi is an ARM clocked at 133 MHz and has 16 MB of RAM. and the speakers have been improved from the previous model. All said and done the Nintendo DSi is an impressive piece of equipment which will keep gamers happy until some thing bigger and better hits the market which for 2009 at least is very unlikely.

The Nintendo DSi Handheld Console will be released in the UK on 3rd April at a retail price of £150. To pick up a cheap Nintendo DSi you will need to do your research on the net. A good place to start is the link below.

Intel Atom Processor For Internet Based Information System

Introduction:

Intel has introduced two versions of the Atom processor. The ones, which are of the series 2xx, 3xx and N2xx with codename "Diamondville", have been especially designed for nettops and netbooks, while the Z5xx codenamed "Silverthorne" is for the mobile Internet devices (MIDs). This particular chip is physically much smaller in size than the others with low power drain, making it suitable for MIDs.

Nettops are the future concept of desk top PCs, in which there would be a solid state disk, no optical drive, and would have a few USB ports for your convenience. It would be a low cost item, around $300, and would be used for basic computing tasks in which you would be able to surf the Internet, access web based and rich internet applications, and have audio and video playback. The netbooks would be ultra-thin notebooks having wireless connectivity and all other functions of a nettop.

Intel's Atom processor for mobile Internet devices brings to you the smallest pocket size Internet experience, having low power consumption and high performance. Intel brings in a revolution in MIDs design, and these devices would gain much competitive advantage utilising Intel Atom processors, along with low power companion chips with integrated graphics, providing an Internet experience and high definition video.

The architecture:

The Atom family has 32 KB of L1 instruction cache, 24 KB of L1 data cache and an L2 cache of 512 KB, with 1 MB in the dual core processor, and the types and capacities in the processors are determined by the chipsets and not by the processors.

The Atom has been built on a different micro-architecture than those of the present dual core ones, and yet the Atom family contains the same instruction set as found in x86 processors as in the core architecture. The processors like the Pentium Pro, Pentium II and higher ran microinstructions not in order, where-as the Atom runs such instructions in order just like the first Pentium. This has enabled reduction in cost, since the components requited for sending and controlling microinstructions has been removed from the design.

Intel's Atom processor brings in the power of mobile Internet, as the smallest mobile Internet processor in the world. The Atom measures less than 25 square millimeters in size, with the 45nm-process chips having a thermal design specification of 0.6 to 2.5 Watt range, going up to a speed of 1.8 GHz.

The Atom family, the smallest of all processors, has certain reasons to be small. First, the Atom processors are all 32bit x86 chips, and by this Intel have done away with 64bit processing with a view that the MIDs of today's and tomorrow's are not going to be available with 64bit processing, there-by using less number of transistors. The concept has reduced the price of Atom processors.

Design features:

Most of the Atom family utilises the ability of using the idle processor time forming a virtual second processor, which is termed as "hyperthreading technology". In this, the operating system looks at each of the core as dual processors, often called two threads. No doubt that this technology is less efficient than "dual core" systems, but then again it provides the system with extra performance. The clock speed of Atom processors remains the same even when idling, and does not clock down in idle state.

The Atom has been designed using 45 nanometer (nm) technology, which has made the Atom processor the smallest in the world. This has been possible with the reduction in the die size since the components going inside the semiconductor are smaller. As a comparison, the Celeron chip utilises 90nm technology, and each of the logical gates within it is four times the size of that of the Atom.

Devices built with Atom processors run cooler. While in the usual mobile processors the thermal design power (TDP) may top at 100 degree Celsius or more, the Atom family runs a bit cooler, topping at 90 degrees with some of the processors having a maximum of 85 degrees Celsius. This makes a lot of difference when you consider hand-held and pocket-sized MIDs. The processors do not only make the size of the devices smaller, but also reduces battery drain from cooling fans.

Applications:

Intel's Atom processor has the smallest footprint, and with its low power consumption and intricate instruction sets, the processor has set a new standard in Internet computing. On an average the Atom family draws about 2watts of power, which makes it an ideal processor for mobile Internet device (MIDs), netlops, and netbooks.

One of the Atom family members, the N270 processor, has wide range of applications in industrial computing. The device with its low power consumption gives a superb thermal performance allowing fan-less operations. This becomes an important factor since, with the absence of moving parts, such as the fan, the overall reliability of the system designed increases appreciably, and there is no need to make provisions for vents in the design.

Critical evaluation:

What does the Atom family has to offer? It is quite interesting to note that Intel's Atom family has modern functions like, Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T), Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extension 3 (SSSE3), etc. put onto an older architecture. Since the Pentium, the Atom is the first to be x86 family of processors. The power management in the processors and their fabrication have been the two most important factors in cost saving at the expense of performance, and as such it does not make the Atom to be a competitor to Core 2 Duo.

Reports say that power consumption and attempt to integrate processors into portable or embedded devices have always been a problem for Intel. The Atom processors are not the first ones that Intel has attempted to bring out aimed at the same kinds of applications. However, the Atom family is radically different from others in the sense that Intel has a new architecture in the Atom which drastically reduces power consumption.

Few of the test results obtained while comparing the Atom against C7 and Celeron-M show that, the overall performance of Atom falls in between C7 and Celeron-M, when under an identical frequency condition. The tests were carried out in Netbooks with the frequency of C7 set to close to that of the Atom and the Celeron-M at a significantly lower frequency. It was concluded that the Atom based machines would have the same kind of performance as that of the machines that we have today.

Whatever it is, the battery life is of a great concern as far as portable machines are concerned. This is going to be an important factor for the user. It was found that cooling requirements in a desktop wind PC were much lower for an Atom based machine, and it can be concluded that it will be even lower in portable machines. In the event the Atom proves to be more battery efficient than Celeron-M, then we might see more Atom based Eee PC owners, with users selling off their Celeron-M based systems to upgrade to the Atom based ones.
